You may need to change the tensioner a bit later on in it's life. Probably about 100000 miles +

Mine actually went quite a lot earlier than that and needed replacing after just over 30,000 miles (fortunately was just still under warranty). I haven't heard anyone else mention this before though, so I think I must have just been unlucky.

your not alone mate. my tensioner went at about 17,000 miles. was driving it for a few weeks before i had it checked and repaired under warranty.
ford also serviced the car for me as i found out they didnt do it prior to me buying the car and kicked up a fuss.

ok, so if the tensioner can wear, is this ever checked at service intervals and what happens if it goes, how do you know. Does the ST engine "freewheel" or do the valves get bent ?

It's something that probably should be checked when it's serviced, whether it is I don't know. With regards to how I found out, it was simply a case that I noticed that there was a whining noise coming from under the bonnet. I knew it wasn't the power steering or anything like that since it was constant from when I turned the ignition on, not just when turning the wheel. All the fluids were ok, so I took it into the dealer to check it out. They said it was the pulley tensioner that was worn and after it was changed, problem solved.

Yes the chain goes noisey when the tensioner has worn.
