might have an oil leak

might have an oil leak - 21/03/09 08:59 PM

there is quite often a drip of oil at the bottom of my oil filter, right in the middle. There is no other oil around the area or coming from above that I can see and no oil dripping down the side of the filter apart from just road grime, I have now wiped it shiny and it is a white filter so I can keep a check on it. So, could it have a tiny crack at the bottom ? Oil level is fine.

The filters sometimes corrode if they get a stone chip we had this problem with my dads mondeo, luckily we spotted the problem before the leak got worse, have you checked to see if the filter is screwed on tight steve.

it felt hand tight and can't see any oil, will have another look tommorrow, if there is no drips down the side then it must be as you say maybe crack in the middle.

Keep an eye on it but it doesn't sound like anything major. Could be that the filter gasket has worn very slightly or a very slight hairline crack in the filter itself.

here is a pic of my leak, takes about a week to get like this but looks definitely from the filter seal. Found my filter tool today and just nipped it up without too much force. Hopefully should be fine until service in a few months.

Yeh that's from the filter seal deffo.

Tightening it may have sorted it, if not loosen it off a bit (catch any oil) clean up the seal and put some clean oil on the seal and re-tighten it.

little drop of oil again today underneath, got a mirror underneath and its leaking at back from the seal, managed another tweak with the filter tool and will see if that is enough. I'll ask for a better quality filter at service, doesn't appear to be motorcraft ?

So, if I was to replace the filter - being its not side on, then I assume tons of oil will poor out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!is that daft or what ?

once the oil is drained very little will come out when filter is removed

afternoon off today, nipped to Evans Halshaw where my MT was fitted, spoke to Service Manager who I now know well, any chance of putting a new oil filter on while I wait (they were very busy and doing an MT on a Focus too), pop back at 3.30 and we will sort it. Nipped back later, had a look around the cars, new KA is well a bit funky inside , job done, £7.82 just for the filter.
